Weekend Recap: March 1, 2025

I wrote about my dinner adventure, specifically, but there is more to say about this weekend!

Saturday morning, Erik and I slept late. As in, almost missed the morning! But then we awoke to play happy homestead.

When we tore down the old fence, we saved all the wood, to use on scrap and garden projects. Of course, after being exposed to the elements for 50 years, some of the 2×4 stringers are wildly warped. Erik cut them all down into the most-consistent 3-foot lengths he could manage. These will become his 3-section compost system, and a potato box for me to grow root vegetables in.

I love watching his brain as he works through these projects. Erik has the ability to break a big project into small steps, and just keep chipping away at the next logical step. He’s also a meticulous planner. He drew these plans for the mudroom shelves that are *incredible*. Like, who needs SketchUp?? It is a level of precision that I simply cannot do. If you locked me in a room and said “you’re here until you replicate this drawing”, I would die there. I won’t post it, as I expect he wants to do a full reveal from draft-to-done when the project is complete.

While Erik worked with power tools, I cleaned and organized the greenhouse for spring. I’ve made my seed order, and last week sorted into “start indoors” (things that need consistent warmth like basil), “start greenhouse” (things that are a little more flexible, like broccoli), “direct seed early” (can direct seed before last frost) and “Direct seed” (pumpkins, cukes, beans, etc — this is definitely the majority of my seeds!)

I also finally planted out the stacked planter (behind me in the photo) with various types of lettuces. That’s something I hope to do better, this year. I’ve successfully grown lettuce, sure, but it bolts and ends up bitter as hell. I’d like to figure out a good way to get a somewhat sustaining “salad bar” of greens.

Saturday evening, Erik and I went out to our friends’ acerage for their Mardi Gras party! We looked, as ever, particularly fab. The food was *incredible*. Our host made a Jambalaya, crawfish pie, and something he called a “bayou tower” (or something like that) which was some kind of creamy spinach stew over baguette. Erik also found the baby in one of the king cakes, and went home with the prize of a dozen farm-fresh eggs!

Sunday was my mom’s birthday. I got up and made scones, and Erik and I picked up some daffodils and went to mom’s spot at Wyuka. This was, I think, the first time we took Lizzie out there!

We had a nice dog park adventure for the pups, and then home for a lazy afternoon. Erik read in the library, while i laid in the sun on the bed with the dogs

And then dinner, as discussed! Post-dinner, the usual Sunday Rituals of watching a Documentary (PBS show on the excavation at Amun), The Crown (we’re immediately post-Diana’s Death, which is sure shaking up a lot of my “mom died at 15” PTSD), and “communion”, sharing a slice of Erik’s fresh-made bread.

And thus ends an idyllic weekend. May this life, with its little perfections, endure.
